Our Backyard Chickens
We've had a flock of chickens in our backyard for years now. We've had numerous cold-weather breeds of chickens over the years like Australorps, Icelandic, Ida Reds, Ida Browns, Barred Rocks, Brahmas and French Black Copper Marans. Today we have a lot of the old hens but are focused on raising French Black Copper Marans (FBCM).
The FBCM's are heritage breed chickens that were originally from a small town in the South of France - Marans, France, hence the name. FBCM's are a dual purpose breed that are known for their luscious creamy dark eggs and their fine meat. FBCM hens have a small comb so they are not as prone to frostbite but the FBCM roosters have large single combs and are prone to frostbite. Keeping their coop dry and the circulating in the winter is key.
FBCM's have orange colored eyes and they are feather-legged. FBCM Hens lay anywhere between 150 - 200 eggs per year. Most chicken breeds lay on average 300 eggs per year.
